Lafayette School Board becomes first Lamorinda District to pass resolution committing to Recycling Program
To aid the City of Lafayette in reaching its State-mandated landfill waste reduction goal, last night the Lafayette School District Board passed a resolution committing to a district-wide recycling program to begin this Fall.
Janet Schneider, CCCSWA, Executive Director told the Board that the CCCSWA, free of charge, would help design the school site programs, provide free containers, promote the program, and provide teachers with lots of resources to reinforce the environmental lessons. She explained how the school district’s disposed waste contributes to the City of Lafayette’s overall landfilled tonnage that must be cut in half or else it could face State imposed fines.
“It’s a win-win. By doing the right thing, the City benefits and the District saves money,” she said “We will make sure the schools are being charged for the current levels of garbage service needed and by introducing recycling reduce those levels over time, decreasing overall costs”.
TRG and Associates’ Principal Lois Humphreys, the CCCSWA-school recycling program coordinator, told the Board that CCCSWA implemented an Orinda school district wide recycling program last year and saved it $40,000 in garbage charges. She also said “The school site programs are customized to meet each school’s need. The school can decide how much or how little CCCSWA assistance they want.”
The Lafayette School Board, enthusiastic about recycling, passed the resolution unanimously.
