Wastebusters Certification

The Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority’s (CCCSWA) Wastebusters Program recognizes and rewards schools that commit to, institutionalize, and continuously improve waste reduction and recycling practices. Schools that meet a variety of program requirements (detailed in the application form) and certify as Wastebusters:             

  • receive an annual cash award  ($2,000 per year for the first 3 years and $1,000 per year for all subsequent years), an award plaque, and media promotion for their efforts;

  • reduce their impact on the environment;

  • reduce the amount of landfilled waste while increasing recycling and reuse of valuable resources;

  • save their school district money on garbage disposal services; and 

  • promote environmental stewardship principles to students.

Eligible Schools

Currently, the following school districts are eligible for the Wastebusters Program:

  • Acalanes

  • Lafayette

  • Moraga

  • Mt. Diablo*

  • Orinda

  • Walnut Creek

*The eligible Mt. Diablo District schools include Bancroft, Walnut Acres, and Valle Verde Elementary, Foothill Middle and Northgate High.

Wastebusters Recycling Award for Custodians - Show your school's custodian how much you appreciated their recycling efforts by nominating them for the Wastebusters Award for Custodians. Winners are selected from each school district and receive a $250 gift card redeemable at a local vendor.
