Electronics Recycling

Electronics Recycling Options
Your unwanted and obsolete electronic equipment and appliances are one of the fastest growing waste streams. When discarded in landfills, these items not only lock up valuable reusable natural resources, they contain toxic chemicals that can contaminate soil and groundwater.
IMPORTANT: It is illegal to dispose of TELEVISIONS, COMPUTER MONITORS and MOST ELECTRONICS in the garbage. The cathode ray tubes (CRTs) contain lead and could contaminate water supplies.
Electronics Waste Recycling Act of 2003
On September 25, 2003, Governor Davis signed the electronics waste recycling act of 2003 (SB 20), the nation’s first comprehensive electronics recycling law. The legislation creates a system for the safe and convenient collection and recycling of hazardous electronic products with the elimination of existing electronic waste stockpiles by the end of 2007. What does this mean for CCCSWA service area residents?
As of August 2004, CCCSWA residents can dispose of unwanted electronics (including monitors and table top-size televisions) curbside on their “Reuse” Day (see Reuse and Cleanup Days). Residents will receive an announcement flyer from Allied Waste Services approximately two weeks prior to their scheduled Reuse and Cleanup Days with the exact collection date and acceptable items.
If you can’t wait until your next Reuse day or don't get one, beginning May 2005, Pacific Rim Recycling will accept (free-of-charge) CCCSWA service area customers' computer equipment and TVs at its Benicia Facility located at 3690 Sprig Road (94510), Monday-Friday, from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. (Five (5) per car maximum).
If you are not a CCCSWA service area customer, what are your options? First, consider donating your equipment to a non-profit or school; you can claim it as a tax deduction. Second, there are a growing number of organizations that will either refurbish them for reuse or dismantle them and recycle the materials as scrap. Below is a list of local organizations that may accept your electronics. Please call ahead to confirm they will take your item.
