WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Winners of the It’s Cool to Recycle at School poster contest were announced today by sponsors, the City of San Ramon and the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority (CCCSWA). The contest was open to all elementary school students within the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.
“The poster contest provided students with a hands-on opportunity to increase awareness and knowledge about how to recycle and minimize waste at school,” said Nancy Tatarka, San Ramon Mayor. “I think it’s imperative that we continue to facilitate and encourage recycling in our schools.”
The City of San Ramon and the CCCSWA have teamed up with the SRVUSD this 2001/2002 school year to enhance its recycling programs. The Cities have provided the schools with technical assistance including free school site recycling containers, juggling recycling educators, and teacher resource kits.
Fifth grader, Erin Higgins of Vista Grande Elementary school won First prize. The Second prizewinner was Kyle Ennis, 3rd grader at Rancho Romero. Third prize was awarded to Kindergartner, Sarah Augello at Montevideo. Miso Ghim at Armstrong Elementary, and Lauren Thurston and Danielle Heller of Vista Grande won honorable mentions.
Winners received Broadway Plaza gift certificates. The teachers of the top three winners also received gift certificates. They will be honored at upcoming San Ramon City Council and CCCSWA Board meetings.
The winning posters will be reprinted and used in the SRVUSD schools to promote and increase recycling awareness. Copies of the winning posters will be distributed at the start of the new school year 2002. The City of San Ramon and CCCSWA will continue working with the schools in 2002/2003 especially in light of the recent passage of AB 373 that encourages school recycling.
“The posters submitted to the contest indicate our students are excited about recycling,” said Mike Shimansky, CCCSWA Chair. “ Their efforts are beginning to show with a 40% increase in monthly recycling tonnage in the last 3 months. We want to support their enthusiasm and efforts.”
Contest judges were Mike Shimansky, CCCSWA chair (Danville Town Council member), Donna Gerber, Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and San Ramon Mayor Nancy Tatarka.
